SECRETARY MONDRAGÓN UNVEILS FIRST MAINSTREET ROAD SIGN

Signs to go up in 15 communities across the state

SANTA FE, N.M.– Economic Development Department Cabinet Secretary Fred Mondragón was in Las Vegas today to unveil the first in a statewide series of MainStreet designation road signs. The signs will act as a gateway into each MainStreet community as well as a marker to designate the downtown as a certified MainStreet community.

“These beautiful signs will indicate that visitors and citizens are entering a place that celebrates historic preservation, supports local business and maintains cultural traditions,” stated Secretary Mondragón. He added, “Our MainStreet communities, like Las Vegas, are the economic backbone of the state.”

Las Vegas Mayor Tony Marquez, Jr. joined additional city and state representatives in attendance at the unveiling. The 36″x36″sign, featuring the MainStreet logo, was placed on the 500 block of Douglas St., across from the El Fidel Hotel.

The MainStreet Road Sign project has been a collaborative effort between the Economic Development Department and the Department of Transportation. The New Mexico MainStreet staff has worked with each community to choose local sign locations. Each will receive one free sign from the “Friends of MainStreet,” with the option of purchasing additional signs. So far a total of 34 signs are set to be erected.

The signs will go up in these MainStreet communities over the course of the next year: Artesia, Carlsbad, Clayton, Clovis, Corrales, Farmington, Grants, Hobbs, as Cruces, Las Vegas, Los Alamos, Portales, Raton, Roswell and Silver City.
