EDD Delivers $1 Million to Communities

Money to fund 10 MainStreet and Arts and Cultural District Projects

SANTA FE, N.M.– The New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD) has allocated an appropriation of $1 million to fund 10 planning, design and construction projects in MainStreet and Arts and Cultural Districts. The grant money will be spread to every corner of the state, helping these communities simultaneously preserve and expand their cultural heritage and economic resources.

Economic Development Department Cabinet Secretary Fred Mondragón stated, “The EDD is thankful for the continued support from the state Legislature in assisting our communities, both rural and urban, plan infrastructure improvements and develop cultural assets.” He added, “The hard work, vision and leadership of our MainStreet and Arts and Cultural Districts provide economic and artistic inspiration to the entire state.”

Here is a full list of communities, projects and funds awarded:

  • Clayton Luna Theatre, Phase 2 $200,000
  • Clovis MainStreet streetscape $131,000
  • Corrales Pedestrian Pathway Planning $120,000
  • Albuquerque Downtown Action Team Cultural Plan $35,000
  • Los Alamos Cultural Plan $35,000
  • Lovington Central Plaza Design and Planning $84,000
  • Portales Depot Focus Area Project $85,000
  • Raton Depot Multi-Modal Center Phase 1 Final Design $200,000
  • Roswell Master Plan $75,000
  • Taos Cultural Plan $35,000

The process for project funding began in June 2009 when the EDD issued a Request for Proposals (RFP). The projects included various design, planning, and construction of capital, infrastructure and renovation projects inNew Mexico’s MainStreet Districts and Arts and Cultural District communities’ central business districts. A MainStreet evaluation committee reviewed the proposals and made suggestions to the Cabinet Secretary. The committee consisted of representatives from the New Mexico Department of Transportation, New Mexico Arts, the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division and the Local Government Division of the Department of Finance. Based on the committee’s recommendations, appropriation for 10 projects was approved by the EDD for FY2010.
