Dolores Huerta Gateway Park, South Valley MainStreet

The Dolores Huerta Gateway Park serves as an important gathering space for community members as well as a key placemaking site for the La Familia Growers Market, the La Familia Growers Market Harvest Festival, and the I Love the South Valley Because Art Exhibit and future Art Crawl. The community has expressed interest in holding additional, larger events at the park and has requested improvements be made to improve functionality and comfort.

Through a partnership between South Valley MainStreet, Bernalillo County, and New Mexico MainStreet targeted design improvements were developed, with a high level of community involvement, to address community concerns.

Proposed improvements include creation of a shaded picnic area, shade for the existing play areas, a new “gateway” structure and stage area, banco wall seating in the Grower’s Market area, modifications to existing shade structures to increase shading capacity, and additional trees. South Valley MainStreet and Bernalillo County received a Capital Outlay grant through the New Mexico MainStreet (NMMS) Program, which will fund the completion of “shovel ready” documents for these improvements and construction for the first phase of installation.

South Valley MainStreet has already installed a new storage shed, interpretive signage, string lighting and a community-built horno, thanks to an AARP grant.
